Seoul Digital Gyujanggak – Cultural Seed Library
Overview
Proposed for the Sejong-daero Historical & Cultural District Design Competition, this project reinterprets the spirit of Gyujanggak, the royal research institute of King Jeongjo, in a contemporary context. It envisions a future-oriented cultural industry hub that integrates Seoul’s 600-year cultural heritage with IT technology and modern lifestyle elements—food, clothing, and living. Moving beyond the concept of a passive archive, the project introduces a new paradigm: a “Cultural Seed Library,” where the creative class and citizens actively discover, cultivate, and generate the cultural seeds of the future.
Urban & Architectural Concept
Responding to the site’s layered historical memory—from the Joseon Dynasty to the modern era—the architectural concept is defined as a “Pavilion of Time.” Positioned at a crossroads where past, present, and future converge, the building adopts an open structure with visual permeability in all directions, seamlessly connecting urban contexts. More than a standalone building, it functions as a three-dimensional communication space through which the flow of the city and civic life freely pass.

Business Vision & Philosophy
Serving as a productive incubator, the project generates new business models through exhibitions and interactive platforms that merge humanities and technology. For citizens and visitors, it operates as an urban sanctuary and cultural landmark; for creators, it functions as an Inspiration Center that stimulates innovation. Ultimately, the project is envisioned as a strategic hub that amplifies Seoul’s cultural competitiveness on the global stage.
