SEOUL (PAIK NAM JUNE) MEDIA BRIDGE
2010
Seoul, South Korea
Overview
“Healing, Responsibility, and a New Symbol.” This project is a Public Art Project born from a profound sense of social responsibility and generational accountability felt by its designer in the aftermath of the 1994 Seongsu Bridge collapse. Lee Byung-joo, Founder of Planning Korea, sought to move beyond the “Miracle on the Han River,” which for over 60 years prioritized speed and efficiency, and instead present a vision that heals Seoul’s collective wounds while guiding the city toward the future. Conceived in 2012, the bridge channels the artistic spirit of Nam June Paik, a pioneer of video art, into monumental urban infrastructure. It is envisioned as the world’s first Extended Media Bridge, destined to become a global icon comparable to the Eiffel Tower, and to transform the Han River into a 24-hour cultural and tourism district that never sleeps. The project is currently ongoing, with a target completion year of 2040.
Urban & Architectural Concept
The project realizes the concept of Social Installation Art, integrating IT, construction, and art within a mega-structure measuring 1,080 meters in length across six levels. It fundamentally overturns the conventional vehicle-centered bridge paradigm by prioritizing pedestrian promenades and bicycle paths, while extending urban functionality onto the water through a yacht docking system. Most notably, the entire bridge operates as a colossal Media Canvas, broadcasting Seoul’s nightscape and cultural content through immersive visual experiences. It stands as a forward-looking digital media landmark, redefining the relationship between infrastructure, art, and the city.

Business Vision & Philosophy
By vertically integrating diverse urban programs—including museums, libraries, IT complex malls, hotels, and convention facilities—the bridge establishes a self-sustaining cultural platform where consumption, culture, and leisure converge seamlessly above the river. Positioned as a must-visit global destination for international travelers, the project is designed to generate substantial added value while simultaneously declaring to the world Korea’s leadership as the birthplace and global epicenter of media art. As such, it holds significance not only as an economic engine but as a national symbolic asset representing Korea’s cultural vision and creative sovereignty.
